screw let me down last night

we were all out drinking all night and someone got the idea to take my buddy's little suzuki samarui out for a little late night mud riding action. I decline the invitation and choose to stay at the house and drink some more. I see it ending with them stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Its an old school little 2 door 4x4 suzuki. built like a tank. They leave and are gone for about an hour when i get a call. Of course they are stuck, just need a little tug. So i grab the girl that was with me and head out there. Have to drive thru a golf course to get to where they are at, driving down cartpaths at one point to get to where they are stuck. Finally get out there and get backed up to the hole they are stuck in as best i could. Terrible terrain out there, some spots that are hard pack ground are full of small hills making it impossible to do a flat pull on the suzuki. I end up backing up at an angle to the hole to pull the suzuki out. In 4 low i start pullin and the loose ground gives way under my passenger side front and rear. Mud cakes my passenger side tires and the side sinks a little bit, enough where the entire bottom of the tires was under the mud. rear driver side tire was slipping too but wasnt sunk in at all. It seemed like i couldnt get the tires in the back to spin at all even when i punched the throttle. like the power wasnt there or something. I ended having someone brinng my buddy's f150 ext cab out there to pull me out then pull out the samarui...anyone got any ideas why the power wouldnt have spun those tires?

As a fan of mudding I say FUN, but, as a former Golf Course Superintendent I say stay the hell off the golf course. There are plenty of places to drive a car/truck. The golf course is not one of them. Not ever. For any reason. I have plenty of stories of tracks, and finding vehicles on my golf course when I used to get to work in the morning. So please respect the long hours and hard work that the golf course maitenance crew puts in to keep that course in fine playing condition. I just hope that you did not damage the course in anyway.

I don't drink and drive anywhere, ever, period. A night in jail and some hefty fines back when I was 21 took that urge out of me forever. I'm just lucky it was a simple traffic stop and I didn't hurt anybody or damage anything.

Not trying to be preachy, just my two cents.

You don't say what your gear ratio is. I can only assume it 3.55 based on the lack of pulling power.

Was this while in 4 low? big difference if not.

Actually, 4 lo should only be used when you are in an area with good traction. 4hi is best used in times with less traction to help prevent the tires from spinning. However I cannot explain the loss of power, it sounds like you were in some low traction terrain, so you shouldn't of had a problem with spinning the rear tires in low. The only thing I could think of is maybe you dont have limited slip (doubt that) or it wasnt working.

I was thinking the same thing. If he was at home drinking and then goes out driving let alone out on a golf course. Not very good.

ok ignore the fact that it was on the golf course...that wasnt why i posted at all. and no i dont drink wine coolers, never have , never will. Bud light no questions asked, but thats besides the point. Truck was in 4Lo and i have 3.55LS gearing (sorry forgot to mark the box to show my sig in the original post). No the golf course was not damaged in any way, i know my way around there as I have golfed it for years and knew how to get where they were stuck at without so much as leaving a single track. The terrain was pretty terrible to say the least, i didnt think it was all that muddy were i pulled into to hookup to the other vehicle at but it was slick on my passenger side which didnt bother me half as much as the lack of power my truck seemed to have. I just hit 75000 miles so im thinkiny maybe its time for tuneup with plugs, wires, maybe cats. I was just incredibly disappointed in my vehicles poor ability to remove the other truck from the mud, like it wouldnt even move it an inch and no matter what i did the back tires seemed to refuse to spin free from the mud in the back

and for the record whenever we did get the truck out i led them out thru a powerline so that they wouldnt go back thru the course, i was not condoning them running thru the course to begin with nor did i realize there was another way to get to where they were until i got out there. Im not the type whose going to risk jailtime for a little fun one night, but I'm also the type who refuses to just let a very good friend of mine hang out to dry b/c there have been plenty of times when I have had to call him in the middle of the night to come get me out of a mudhole and he comes no questions asked. Im an avid golfer and golf at that particular course 3 days a week so trust me when i say i was more than careful in regards to the landscaping and all that not to mention the fact that the sporting goods store im a manager at also happens to be owned by the owner of the golf course so it was a pretty scary situation for me. but like i said before, i wasnt condoning the actions in my post, thats not why i posted, i am concerned about the lack of power my truck seemed to show. Maybe im just not used to offroading with this truck yet, but i know i could never fail to spin the tires in my tacoma if i wanted to when pulling someone out of the mud

I don't care what your gear ratio is... With 33" tires, in 4Lo, and in mud you should be able to break loose!

Something's wrong with your truck...

my thoughts exactly. my buddy's truck that pulled me out had no problem slinging the mud around and getting his tires free, his is a 99 f150 ext cab 4x4 with the 5.4L and auto tranny just like mine, only thing im not sure about are his gears but i am going to find out. it was quite the embarrassment for my truck to get stuck like that when it wasnt even buried. ive been in much worse in my other trucks in the past and never gotten stuck like i was this time. I just cant see those gears causing me that much of a problem, if they did then why would ford use them?

Ya sounds to me something is wrong. Plugged up cats? fouled out plugs? i have a little Zook that i wheel all the time. It is geared, with yota axles, custom lift, and some 33"tsl Waiting til they are done to move up to 35". 33" look tiny even on my Zook! Anyway, I tug that thing out everytime I get it stuck (mud, rocks, people's front lawns, etc.) with my 2004 F150 4.6 L v8. Everytime I do, I spin my tires easily. And for all you people who simply posted replies to bash him, I'm sure you have never done anything illegal! . B.S. !! Leave the guy alone, he was helping out his buddies. Remember he opted NOT to go (being resposible). They went and got stuck. THEY chose the golf course (not him!). He simply helped get them out. I'm sure all of you would have done the same, if not, sure am glad your not in my circle of friends!

Can you do a brake stand on a dirt or gravel road and get the back to break?
