changing gears question 9.75 rear end

Hi,
I just received my 4.88 gears for my 05 F150 FX4 supercrew. I ordered yukon gears with the master install kit. My question is this..... Does the carier use shims to adjust preload? I did not get any carrier shims with my gears, so I am either missing parts or I know some rear ends use side adjusters that screw out and in for preload. I think I am missing parts from my order, I know going from 3.73's to 4.88's I will need to adjust the preload somehow. Any input will be helpful, as I wanted to install these tomorrow.

Aloha,
Jared

good question. I want to say it has the side adjusters but I am not able to recall where I gathered that piece of information from. Hopefully someone else will chime in

There are shims inside the carrier where the clutch packs are that are used to adjust the preload of the pack. There is no screw type adjuster for preload on that rearend. Theres also shims for the carrier on the outside that go in between the axle housing and the carrier bearings. Those are not for preload. Those are for backlash adjustment of the ring&pinion. There is a special tool for that rear end to set up the preload for the packs. I would suggest taking it to a dealer to have it set up or a shop that knows how to before you put the carrier in the housing. This will eliminate clutch chatter, premature failure, improper engagement of posi. Also if you have new clutches going in make sure you soak them in oil real well before hand. You will be glad you did.

sikryd, where did you find gears for the front diff, I know the frotn is a high pinion 8.8 which needs reverse rotation gears, but I can't seem to find any. i only need 4:56. I would also like to put a trutrac from Detroit in the front also.

I have a Yukon 4.56's for the rear 9.75...it's a min install kit. I'd be willing to let it go for cheap!

How cheap is "cheap", and how new or used are they?
