Can't shift from 2WH to 4WH or 4WL
Hello, I drive a 2001 Ford F-150 XLT Super CAB with the Off Road package.
It's a 5 Speed 4.6V8 and the 4x4 is manual as well.
Lately I haven't been using my truck off road and now for whatever reason I can't shift into 4x4 at all.
I understand that I need to be stopped and in neutral, have my foot on the clutch and the break pedal in order to shift into 4WL, but It won't budge. It just won't slip from 2WH.
Has anyone experienced this before? If so, what was done to fix this problem?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

There is a position sensor that threads into the front of the transfer case, if this is missing the washer it is possible for it to be threaded in to far. This can result in a part inside (dont know what it is called) jamming against the sensor and not being able to go into position.
Does the lever move at all? If it doesen't get under there and look to see if something is caught in it, or that it is bent, that prevents it from moving. If the linkage looks ok you have an internal problem in the T-case.

Thanks again Everyone. My 4X4 is now working!
My Linkage needed to be lubricated. I used some penetrating oil and had to work it for an hour or so, but it's now engaging.
Thanks again for the tips.

Reading this thread has me wondering.
I recently purchased a used 2001 SCAB with off road package.
I was wondering about shifting into four wheel drive. Should I be stopped? Should I put the transmission into neutral?
Any other things I should know.
Thanks in advance.

it is all explained in the owner's manual. If you don't have one here is a link to download one: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp
The jist of it is: You shift from 2H to 4H or from 4H to 2H at any speed up to 55 mph. Do not shift from 2Hi to 4Hi with the wheels spinning. The vehicle speed must be less than 3 mph, the brake applied, and the trannny in NEUTRAL to shift into 4L, foot on Clutch for manual no need for Neutral.
