Nerf Bars - Better with them or without them?

I'm going camping next weekend and there is a mild atv/4x4 trail. Last time I went the bars hit a few times on the more uneven spots. They are the stock nerf bars that come with a supercrew. I've heard stories where they bend easy and hit the body. They are a cinch to take off so I was thinking about taking them off for the weekend.

Good idea or bad idea?

Thanks

Well I took em off for the heck of it....wife pulls in the driveway and says...."Your truck looks tougher from some reason".

Still interested in additional feedback.

If you think that they will bend easy then take them off...I'm not a big fan of them anyways....

I personally like the added protection they give. If you were to have some sort of mis-hap, I would rather damage the nerf bars rather then the body of my truck, but then again you have the factory nerf bars and I hear they are very expensive to replace.

Buuuut he's worried about hitting something with the nerf bars, and then having the nerf bars bend back into the body, creating even more damage.

You should take them off. I have seen what happens when they bend and it's not pretty.

Just looked at your pics, and I have to agree. You give up alot of ground clearance with the bars attached. I have mine on because my wife is short and has one hell of a time getting in the truck without the steps.

My 4x4 work truck does have a cleaner look to it without the bars.

If you don't need them on, I vote to leave them off.

yeah, I guess it all depends on how you hit em. Before I installed mine, I hit some peice off wood in the road and it got kicked back behind my front tire and damaged the lower part of my driverside door. If I had the nerf bars it would not have damaged the body of my truck. This past winter I drove thru a car wash to get some of the salt off my truck. It was so cold that day the car wash broke while I was inside, AFTER it had sprayed 6" of foam all over my truck. I had to drive out with limited visibility and ended up side swiping some concrete block which was protecting some mechanical equipment. It bent my nerf bar in but proctected the side of my truck from any damage. I'd have to agree with you all in offroading though, you obviously get more clearance with out them but I just have always looked at nerf bars as added protection.

Chris - Good points. You are right about the protection for daily driving. They have blocked some stuff from flying up. I dont know what damage would have been done but the bars did block them. I'll probably put them back on but for now Im really liking the look
