2000 AWD Explorer

Hey Guys, some of you might laugh when I post a question about the AWD 2000 Explorer in this forum. If you do, I need to know!
I need to know how the AWD Exlporer performs off-road. I may take it to a remote area in AZ for fishing.
The area where I want to take the Explorer to has lots of rough roads with some severe ruts due to flood washouts and the road can also be very rocky with the occassional boulder. There may be a river crossing or two as well. Water would never be any more than a foot to 18 inches at any of the crossings. When I have taken my '97 4x4 F150 to this area I have put it in 4H in a few spots but never needed 4Lo. The Explorer has 30.5x9.5x15 tires with average clearance. It's my father's and niether he nor I have ever taken it on any roads that couldn't easily be traveled in your average sedan. From what I have described, can the AWD Exlporer handle it?
Is AWD an off-road feature or more for driving in extreme wet/snow conditions? THANKS

ahh, I wouldn't bet on the all wheel drive working well for three reasons, open rear center and front diffs. The transfer case also uses a viscus coupling to transfer power from the front wheels to the rear wheels which, isn't the most reliable or efficient way for 4wheeling. It is also important to note the explorers don't exactly have the best suspension flex which leans to more problems with the open diffs when one wheel is in the air.
