Does any one really take a 150 off road?
Not just F150s, but Expeditions, too! Level 3 is probably the max for a near-stock truck.
Mudder- you weren't the first & won't be the last to get "hung up".
Kind of embarrasing, but at least we tried!

Hey Mudder,
I have a question for ya. After looking at your pics of the front end of your truck, did you have to remove the factory front skid plate to mount the winch? If so, is it the same for the warn? And are you really getting a lift kit? That'll look awesome!

Buckster,
I had to remove the skid plate. The winch just barely hits it. So I will have to notch it a bit, or I might just get an aftermaket something, or just be without. Yes, my truck is going to 4 Wheel Parts on Monday to have a 4" Rancho installed. Happiest day of my life

Yeah, mudder, speaking of your winch, tell us more about it. There is a custom shop here in my town, and he was telling me about one that sits behind the front tag and stays hidden that way, but I am afraid that would scratch up the chrome on the bumper. The way that you have yours is the way that I came up with to put one on without being out in front of the truck on the brushguard. What kind is it and all that good stuff? Did you have to get that particular brushguard for it to work, or could you just mount it on with any one?

The winch is a Ramsey Pro 8000. The mount can work with any grill guard, similar to the Manik. I have had the cable out a few times and have had no problems with it rubbin anywhere. Only problem is, I have to figure out a way to mount a skid plate
Oh well, I was always complaining because the winch was too hidden, and could barely be seen. Guess with the lift goin on, that will help get it up more, and be seen, hopefully.

Heck yeah we take F150's off roading...What is the point of 4x4 if you don't push it to the limit..???

I wouldn't waste my time in a desert. That can't be much fun going over some bumps and some sand... I take my F150 offroad all the time....

Pickup Man,
Warn makes a Semi-Hidden mount that puts the winch between the frame rails. I had it on my 97 with a warn XD9000i. I transferred it to my 2000. It does require trimming the valance but the skid plate remains intact. I prefer having the winch between the frame as it lowers the stress on the frame. The nice thing about the major winch manufacturers use the same bolt pattern on the winch mount. That makes a warn mount interchangeable with Ramsey or Superwinch. Check out http://wwww.warn.com and click on Ford semi-hidden kit. There is a pic of a 97 F-150 with it.
Just a side note. Back in 1998 I bent the front frame on my 97 jumping a dune. I now believe if it hadn't been for the winch mount the damage would have been greater. The mount bolts up to the tow hooks mounting point. It in essence creates an extra cross member.
Regards

I live in canyon country and go to the maze, dark canyon and robber's roost alot. Class III off-road is OK for stock 150, but class IV you'd want the short wheel base & some Mods (33's, 4" lift, skid plates, 4.11's, at minimum). You'd be much better off w/ the super duty with the solid front axle for class IV. Class IV is quite harry & regardless of mods you'll probaly damage your rig on occasion. At that point it is not about just getting there, it's about taking the hardest route.

Ohhhhhhh Noooooooo It's Mr. Bill,
Yes, I take my F-150 to the Smokey Mountains every chance I get. I know its not Colorado, or Nevada, but it's where I grew up. The first Ford I owned was a 90' XLT 5-speed manual 4x4 Full Size Bronco 302cid 4" Trailmaster susp. lift w/35x12.5 BFG's MTs and Diff. Locker. My current truck did not have the clearance for rock crawling up in Crossville, TN, so I lifted it myself. If you want to swap stories, take a look at my profile.

For instance has anyone done a class 4 (or even a class 3) in the desert southwest? How's the stock ground clearance, wheelbase and CG on tough tight trails?

I once took mine to my buddies house. His driveway was full and I had to park in the grass. -- Does that count??--
Just kidding...adding some levity here. I think the better question: how much time do you spend ON ROAD?

Ya, even some of us 2wd owners take them offroad! I just washed my truck yesterday, and could not resist getting it all muddy and nasty lookin this afternoon. Mud is cool! By the way, does anybody here do any offroading in North Tulsa, like in the Owasso area?
