Hey,

Other Houstonians on the board who go offroad, cool! I couple of friends & I go off road every month or so in a few places.

The SJ river bottom, starting up at 242 (east of 45) is a real good run. YOu can go about 20 miles downriver with several water crossings, sugar sand spreads, hills to climb, etc. The problem now is that some rowdies caused the locals to complain and the sheriff has posted the entrance. So, if you are found in the river bottom without a letter from an owner of river adjancent property stating that they authorized your entrance, you are given a criminal tresspass ticket. Sucks! However, I have connections at Riverwalk (off 1314) and can get the letters or one of the owners to come with us.

We have also gone up to Kingsland (near Marble Falls) to a place called "the slab". It was a very good place. No mud, just rock and gravel but very challenging, especially for an essentially stock vehicle. There were plenty of places to challenge a highly modified mountain goat as well! We will probably plan another trip.

We know a couple of folk that are regulars to Shiloh Ridge and they love it. That is our next planned trip although we haven't figured out when.

Hey if any of you want to see if we can plan a group trip, the more winches the merrier send me an email and I will keep you informed as to what is happening. We could even use this forum as there aren't many people posting.

Forgot to mention we are also talking about a North or South Padre trip. There is some good beach on dune riding down there and civilization right around the corner should campign not be your thing.

Just a warning--driving on the dunes is illegal...I think it is a pretty hefty fine. There are a bunch of people concerned about the dunes being damaged and washing away. I'd be careful about the law if you are planning on dune hopping. Other than that, have fun!

i have a 4 wheeler so the winch part is out of the question for me

we are going to shiloh ridge the weekend of the 23rd. we try to get up there at least once a month.

2-3 kids were killed there a few weeks ago. They have parts that are done up like a 4-wheeler race track and there a couple kids that were on one 4 wheeler and tried to do the jumps and did not make it.

it is a fun place to go but people do not think about how dangerous it is

Holy cow pies Batman! This is one SERIOUSLY old thread!

I had no idea this forum was that old!!!

Okay, needless to say, I checked it because I too, am interested in where to go 4 wheeling in the Houston area. For those that don't know, a quick ferry ride accross Galveston to Bolivar gets you on the beach at Crystal Beach, and if the tide is low, you don't run out of drivable beach until you are nearly in Louisiana.

I would be down for a trip like this. I made that run down old HWY 87 (the beach your speaking of) about 2 months ago. Pulled out 2 stuck vehicles and played in the soft sand for a bit. Let me know if yall get anything like this together

Just make sure you're East of Rollover Pass before you try to make that run to LA And you'll now need a parking permit to "park" on Crystal Beach.

Yeah, I was reading it along thinking it was a current post too. As far as places around Houston, i've been hearing a lot about "General Sam's" up around Huntsville. I won't mud in my F-150, but she'll tow our '90 Ramcharger 4X4 with a 15K Warn Winch up there to use....and be used

if you want a real tough area on crystal beach right over the ferry about 5 miles up on your right is a private beach house community called biscane or someting like that. if you pass it and get on the beach to come back behind it you will find a really thick clay like mud with dunes and water crossings. my truck didnt make it and i payed 300 bucks for 2 tow trucks to get me out but my friend made it through in his ranger. i wouldnt suggest going without a winch
