Tow hooks
I'm new to 4x4's so forgive me if this is a no brainer. Why are the tow hooks on the front of the truck? If I'm pulling somebody out I'd think the hooks should be in the back of the truck. Should I be pulling them out in reverse? Also, how are you supposed to attach a closed loop strap onto a closed loop tow hook? Should I use some type of S hook to attach the two?
Inquiring minds want to know...at least this one does.
Thanks,

hmmm. if you get stuck (hey, it could happen), you may need to be towed from the front. hence the hooks. or you can tow someone in reverse (usually a lower gear than first). in the rear you can pull the frame by use of the hitch/receiver. in the front, tow hooks come in handy.
as for a strap, pull the closed-loop end through the hook and then take the other end of the strap and feed it through the strap's loop. the most secure way to fasten that sucker. can't come off itself or the tow hook.

Well according to some people on the board, "choking" the tow strap is bad. They said that it would result in the strap pulled so tight that you would have to cut it off the hook. I've never seen that happen, every one that I've used like that has always come off just fine. You may have to work a little bit to losen it, but nothing too serious. What I would use though would be a clevice. We use them all the time at Seneca Foods to pull 25 ton pea combines buried in 2 to 3 ft of mud, so they are stong enough. You just have to get one that matchs the strength of your tow strap.

I also recommend clevices (clevi?).
One word to the wise, the pin that you can tighten on the clevis - don't tighten it more than enough to just have it stop turning. If you get enough pull power on that thing, they can tighten themself a bit more, and you'll need vice grips to get them off.
These are also good, becuase (on the 150's at least) our tow hooks are closed. The open ones might be the only thing about a chevy truck that i think should be on a Ford.
