Post Water in Differential

About 4 months ago, I got my rear diff checked to see if I had got any water inside from offroading. There was very little found inside, but I decided to change the fluid anyway. After replacing the fluid, the diff started shuddering around corners, meaning the clutches have lost it's ability to slip smoothly. So I decided to take it in to get them to either replace the clutches, or just prelube the plates individually, but they said that it won't be covered under warranty on account that they have records of my previous visit, that water was found in the diff. The way the vent tube is routed, I find it hard to believe that this is very uncommon! The top of the vent tube is clipped onto the bottom of the structural cross member of the box, which is unsealed to keep out foreign substances. What happens is that the cross memeber fills up with mud & water, which then drains into the vent tube!

The foremen at the dealership that I'm at, is going to get a rep from Ford to call me, and give some bull**** explanation why it can't be warrantied. Has anybody else had this problem? I plan on routing the vent tubes higher with a "walking cane" on the end to prevent drainage into the diff. I was wondering if anybody has made this modification.

fordification,

I haven't got around to doing it but I will before the truck sees any deep water. Don't forget the front diff. Did you add friction modifier to your diff when you changed the fluid? That will cause the clutches to fail.

That's a very common question, and important. I think, in total, I've added about 5 bottles of friction modifier. And only one is needed. The second time I took it in to get it looked at, all they did was a bottle of friction modifier, even after I explained that I've added four! I used the Ford modifier also, but not Ford synthetic. Although, synthetic gear oil is synethetic gear oil. Same properties.
