Some help for a newbie?
Some help for a newbie?
Well, I got a 2003 FX4 and I don't know when I should use 4L or there are times when 4H should be used instead. I know to use 4H in most situations where 2H shouldn't be used (like when I'm out playing so to speak, heh), however. Can someone tell me when I should use 4L and how in terms of using 1 or 2 or simply leaving it in drive?
Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot!
i use 4 low when going up steep grades that are very uneven, or when going over big rocks or whenever i need alot of power when going at a low speed, i will use 4 low and 1st or 2nd gear going down very steep or uneven grades were i know alot of brakeing would be reqiured by doing this the engine will be doing the work instead of the brakes and there is less chance of a tire loseing traction and casiung a roleover, but it is really up to the situation, hope this info helps
I honestly don't know what I'll be doing with the thing, but I do live in Florida, so my options are usually rather limited I would think. This is my first truck--I just sold my 01 Cobra. I used to race the quarter all the time. I'm actually considering bracket racing the F-150 in Tough Truck just cause it would be an easy $100. hehe
I really don't know much at all about this stuff--that's why I asked the question. Maybe a better understanding of how this stuff is supposed to be used will help me decide how I'd like to play.

4H and 4L
4L is great for really steep inclines or for pulling really heavy loads (or your friends out of the mud). I like to use 4H for hitting mudholes or obsticles that require some speed to get through. Just remember that if you really don't use your 4 wheel drive regularly, it is good to at least (I personally think) once a month to engage your 4wd to ensure that it doesn't stick when you really need it.
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, if you are going to use it in the kinds of tough truck competitions I am thinking of, you better get a beater truck to do that. I don't think you want to trash your new ride in a competition like that or have an inoperable daily driver (if this is your daily driver). An older truck makes a lot better tough truck because it is more expendable. These competitions can cause severe damage to your ride to the extent of bending or in extreme cases breaking the frame.
I'm sorry--I was refering to Tough Truck in Fun Ford Weekend. The part I want to do is simply bracket racing in the 1/4. Plus I can do the weekly brackets and take home some money.
Thanks for all the input guys, this has been a really big change for me. heh
