2wd vs 4wd

i know a 4wd drive truck is the choice for off roading for many reasons. i am 18 years old and i was given a 1999 ford f150 xlt extended cab truck. unfortunately it is only 2wd. i would like to set up the truck to handle the off-raod. i know its not going to be as good as a 4x4, but is there any suggestions on how to set up a 2x4 to handle more terrain than it comes capable of. i live in florida so theres not much more than mud, water and ditches. i also want to know about converting it to a 4x4. is this expensive or even worth the time to look into. ALSO: is there such a place on the web dedidcated to 2wd trucks and off-raod parts.

thanks you to everyone who leaves some input

i've got a 2wd

i would recommend a locker of some sort for the rear (whether you have a LS or not). and for sand i'd go with some AT's... and if you're doing some offroading a lift will allow for larger tires (and larger tires are cooler looking and do better offroad IMO). just my 2 cents. i have a powertrax locker and it's the cheapest you'll find out there, i haven't had any problems with it but some people don't like them. hope that was some help
