price of gear change?

ok, I'm thinking of getting 4.56 gears. what is the "NORMAL" price of a gear change? (just the laber) I'll be trying to find the best deal on gears and install kits.

ALSO

How do i know if i have a LS rearend?
i have a 2000 4x4 Sport with a tow package. (NEWLY 35" tires and body lift)

AND

Would it be a good idea to get a Locker??

thanks!

My mechanic here in town charges $55 an hour. The book calls for 4.7 hrs. labor on a rear end swap. The cheapest "new" gears that I have found are $160. The install kit was $65 I think. Add it all up---- $500-$600.

I think what Nacho meant is that yes you have to change both front and rear gears or otherwise the front and back will try to pull each other apart. As for having to put a LS in the front if you put one in the rear is a big NO. Actually having a LS in the front would make the steering pretty funny. You can get a good aftermarket LS for the 8.8 rear for about $325-400.

I got quotes from shops with prices ranging for 4wd gear swaps from $1250->1600 bucks. You'll need 2 install kits and the gears. I believe the 2 sets of gears cost me about $375->400, and the install kits run about $100ea. I figure that you will pay about $600 for labor. I paid $500 and had an aquaintance do it. So far, so good!
