Question Why Does gear lube.......

stink so bad??????

I changed mine, and left the old stuff in the pan in my garage over night, and it really smelled bad..... Can't even describe it.

Nothing major, I know, but just curious.....

High sulfur content........

On steel gears, an iron sulfide layer forms. The layer helps the gears slide against one another instead of scuffing.

Thanks AJ,

That explains why there was that blue - grayish "film" on the gears. I wasn't concerned with it, but helps explain the smell......

Question

Mitch, The big reason your gear lube smelled so bad is because it had friction modifier in it. Hopefully, you installed modifier in you diff. after changing the lube? Ford OEM or Dana part# 43161 has always given me best results.

Thumbs up gearmanx17:

Thanks for the follow up. Yes, I got the Friction Modifier from Ford for $4.99. Looked at their 75w140 synthetic lube and they wanted $19 / qt for it..... Got some Amsoil for only $8.99/qt. Well, it really cost $11.99/qt, but the gal that rang me up, only scanned one of the bottles and it was the 75w90 for the front!! I figured it was on sale or something, until I looked at the receipt.

Oh, yeah. The front lube smelled bad too. I know you don't need the modifier for the open diff front end?

The stink is just getting out of my garage. I've had to move the empty pan outside!! It still reeks!
