Question I accidentally switched to 4hi at 60mph

I was going down a country road in Florida and not paying too much attention, I accidentally switched from 2hi to 4hi thinking it was the air conditioning. Do you think this would be detrimental to the 4 wheel drive system? let me know what you think. I haven't put it in 4wd since just to be on the safe side.

Did you hear any loud noises when you did it?!!!

I wouldn't worry about it. I have shifted at over 50 before. Especailly if you were traveling straight! The front was traveling the same as the rear. I really don't see a problem with it.

If you didn't hear anything bad, then you should be okay. I think I have done it before too, I think it just doesn't shift until you slow down. Just wait until you hear the clunk when you shift into 4 Low, you swear it was your transfer case hitting the ground. Good luck.

I have a manual 4x4 shifter, so I'd have to be really drunk to accidentally shift it into 4-Hi, but I believe - and the others here will correct me if I'm wrong - that no damage can result in your situation because the magnetic clutch will NOT engage at a speed higher than 55, so no damage possible.

This seems like an issue Ford would contemplate, i.e. a **** just like the A/C, and would make provisions for.

It probably made the shift without any problem.

If you had twisted it to 4 low, there's an interlock mechanism that prevents it from shifting into low if you're not in neutral -- so crank away (we've all done it -- reaching for the fan control).

cpadpl, you are correct the gem module will not allow a shift at 60 mph.
