I have a friend that bought a 98 f250 (150 body style) and he wants to change it to 5 lug fo wheel optons there is only like 3 for the 7 lug. What would we need to change?
He would basically have to turn it into a 150... new axle shafts, new front spindles (possibly uprights and control arms too? not positive... basically, he's better off finding 8-lug rims... they're not uncommon, though. you just need to get away from the single rim dealer he is assuredly dealing with... Super-Duties all have 7-lug wheels, and I have seen more than a few different styles available for them. (Work for Ford in Dearborn, so I see a TON of them every day). Look around... they're out there...

Josh, your friend would have to change quite a bit, mostly in the rear end. The LD 250's and the 7700's use a 10.25 rear rated at 5300lbs, he would need 5 lug axles from a 9.75 rear. I believe those are rated at 4200lbs? That alone might create some problems. Your taking a 3/4 ton and turning it into a 1/2 ton.
These things have 7 lugs, not sure why they don't have 8. Anyway, all Super Duties have 8 lugs, look under the hub caps.
I don't believe the Expeditions have a 3/4 ton capacity rear end.
Hope this helps a little.

According to the 'Ford SourceBook' the 7700's and LD250's come with a semi-floating 10.25 with a 5300lb capacity, hence a 3/4 ton rating.
The full floating 10.25 in the F250 SD and up start with an around 6000lb capacity.
The 9.75 has a 4200lb capacity and the 8.8 has a 3800lb capacity.
Expeditions and regular F150's with the 5.4 get the 9.75, which will have 5 lugs.

There were two F250's in 98...one that looked like the F150 and the older style like yours was the heavier one.
Btw...keep that straight six! It's a great engine and I hope Ford brings it back some day.

OK, I stand corrected. I was going off an aftermarket gear application chart which I now know is wrong!
My chart shows the 8.8R front for the Expy and F250LD - what front do you have?
I used to have the 10.25 FF on my '88 F250HD. Strong as hell!
BTW - there is a lot more aftermarket support for the 10.25 than the 9.75 although this may soon change since the Lightning runs the 9.75.

Actually, there's not much for the 10.25 rear in the aftermarket. I believe Auburn Gear and Dana Spicer are the only ones. The 9.75 is real popular. I was hoping Powertrax would come out with something, but I emailed the tech once and said "probably never" because of the low demand. I found out the hard way when I bought the truck because mine doesn't have a LS.
Also, the SuperDuty's came with either 10.25 or 10.50 rear which have the same 35 teeth spline gear. The Excusion's came standard with 10.5 rear.
Just to let everyone know. Those damn 7-lug wheels suck!!!

I had the Auburn Gear 10.25 LS in my old truck, it worked great. I think I read somewhere that the ARB airlocker is available for the 10.25 as well.
My comment on aftermarket support was based on the lack of gear ratios for the 9.75/8.8R combination - when I had mine changed there was 3.73, 4.10 and 4.56 and I really wanted 4.30. It may be that the 8.8R is the issue.
