When you pull the lever back to 4Hi the switch in the T-case tells the GEM that 4x4 has been requested. The GEM activates the vacuum solenoid and this activates the Front axle actuator motor assy.

Thanks JMC.

What is the GEM?
I don't have to shift into 4hi its shifting on its own. So I unplugged the vaccum line into the vaccum motor and this seemed to stop it going into 4x4, but my indicator light is still coming. Could the GEM be causing this whatever that is?

Thanks
Darin

It could be the GEM (Generic Electronic Module). The testing should be left to a tech or the Dealer.

Try unpluging the switch on the T-case. It is next to the breather hose. If it turns out the 4x4 light then it is part of the problem.
