My 97 F150 has a squeaking noise upon initial acceleration. Dealer thinks it is the slip yoke and wants $200 to replace. Has anyone experienced a similar situation, and what are your comments.

But I do have a few questions about your Gibson swept side...

How do you like it (sound, fit, looks)?
Did you install & was it difficult?
Do the joints need welding?
Did you lose low end?

I had noise & a bump each time I would start from a stop sign. It was the slip yoke then. Re placed it everything just fine now . Mine was under factory warr. still at the time. Or it would have been $200.00 for me too!!!! Your Friend, LARIAT 1

I had the same issue. My 1997 F150 was still under warranty. The dealer said that all that was need was to pack the slip yolk with white silicone grease. This was done by the dealeer and has solved the problem. I had it done about 1 month ago and it is still a working solution. Has anyone heard of this fix? How about the long term. Should I insist that the slip yolk be replaced. The truck is still under warranty. Thanks.

 

dlsipe: I'm not sure if it is the slip yoke or not but if you pack it full of grease and it quits that is a good indication. If it doesn't stop, I would look at u-joints!

Possum: My truck had the yoke replaced. It sounded just like you described. Before I took it to the dealer though I tried to fix it myself. I used the best grease and packed it full. It lasted a couple of weeks then back to its old habits! I would have them replace it before your warranty runs out or risk being short a couple Ben Franklins!

i too had the take-off thud, squeak, bang..LOL.. i was under the inital impression that it was my leaf springs.. there was a recall on the 97, but i guess it didnt apply.. i took it to my dealer and they adjusted the springs, but that wasnt it.. so i complained again.. mind you this is a 97 with 41000 on it.. so i took it back and they diagnosed the slip yoke.. it comes in on thursday.. no cost !!!!.. while we are talking noises.. anyone had trouble with either the upper or lower ball-joints ???
