2000/2001 Rear Axle Whine
I have a 2000 2wd with a special order 3.55LS and no noise at all. I just turned 21,000 miles with no problems other than the 2nd to 3rd grind.

JJ,
Sound stayed the same - no better or worse. Could be in the front diff, wheel bearings etc. It makes the sound while coasting in neutral with out a load on the drivetrain. Sound is steady from take off up to any speed, but seems loudest at 30 and 45 mph. Only 3000 miles on it now so I still have 33,000 miles left to find out what it is. I'll just turn up the radio volume and enjoy the rest of the truck. Not a big concern at this time. Otherwise a Great Truck.

Dewayne Fuller,
Some guys have had good sucess reducing the noise by installing the Mag-Hytec diff cover and using the LE gear oil that he sells. Call them and see what they have to say. 1-818-786-8325

I Have changed the prop ,trans bearing, axle bearing, front wheel bearings but still have the whine so after reading everyones comments it must be the ring gear. Do they cost alot in the US. As i may have to ship to
the UK.

Took old to dealer and was told it was good and should look this way. With all the rear end troubles Im reading about just wanted to know if the were stright with me (gray milku OK?). I have 3:11

Ok i have a whinne that comes from the front of the car like almost directly infront of the steering column. I have a 99 Expo with the 5.4L triton and tow package. The whine usually comes when releasing the gas and also my engine is very loud. Are your engines loud as well. I mean its not like diseal or 4 carb loud its just very nosiey and also my Expedition is a 35 thousand with a tranny replacement at 24 thousand. Also does any one else have a problem with the fuel gauge. Since day one the thing never worked.
Yeh, my 01 F150,SC,2WD, 5.4L (10k miles) has a rearaxle whine, too. It is noticeable at about 45 mph in coast or float mode. I recently took it to three dealerships for a test drive with their "driveline gurus" and each and every one said it was normal and they could not do anything to eliminate the whine. I,like others here, think they have ulterior motives for BSing me. I have done some investigation to realize that setting up a rearend properly is not easy and most mechanics prefer not to. I first heard the sound soon after I bought it but had to go on a trip with it. 5000 miles later the sound had not seemed louder but I took it to the dealer where I bot it and the service manager took a ride with me to hear the whine. His opinion, unlike the recent 3 dealers noted above, was that the ring and pinion gears were not mated properly and said that whenever I wanted, a mechanic would check it out. I had to leave that state for awhile, so I put off any further action. Now, a few thousand miles later, its a trifle louder so after the dealer responses around here, I think I will go back to the original dealer to try to get the gears "looked at" and perhaps the bearings preloads checked, too. I will post any new developments on my whinitus case.
Yeah, you know it's easy just to turn the radio up louder or install a loud exhaust system to "MASK" the noise, but the FACT is there should be no gear "WHINE" at all! I Had a '97 with the 3.55 ratio & a '99 with the 3.08 that had no rearend noise whatsoever. Normal my A**!!

Rear end whine in the 2000 F150. I have had a whine since new in my F150. It is very loud between 40 / 45 MPH during acceleration or when pulling any kind of load. My dealer has replaced the crown & Pinnion twice and replaced the entire rear end, housing and all twice and the noise has been there, at the same speed, each time there are new parts put in. The dealer says that Ford says I'm stuck with it, that all F150 / 7700 series make the same noise which is a bunch of B-S- since I know other owners with the same truck and theirs is quiet. Almost every vehicle I have owned since my first one in 1956 has been a Ford and I finally have one that is less than acceptable.
Our truck is a 2000 extended cab, short box, 7700 series, 5.4L EFI engine, 2 wheel drive, 4 speed automatic, trailer tow package, 3.73 gears

I have a barely audible whine around 67 MPH. I'm sure it is the rear end; but I'm not terribly worried about it. I've had several rear wheel drive vehicles with some rear end whine and no problem ever developed. One was a BMW 325i . . . .
Ha!
I believe that one of the posters above (with multiple rear-end failures) was the photographer for those marvelous single-wheel burnouts on https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/000853.html and was the one with the best burnout of the group.
I went back to verify my recollection prior to this post, however, somebody pulled the pix from the thread, so since I cannot prove my recollection, he will remain nameless.
