Check your Limited Slip

Well once again my Supercrew is going back to the dealer for repair!

I would Advise all the limited slip owners to check there axle. I got stuck on wet grass this weekend with the right tire spinning freely and the left one just sitting there waiting to roll. Thanks to 4 wheel drive I did get out. Or in my case was it one wheel drive.
(thank heavens for that left front tire)
Well maybe I shouldn't say just sitting there. there was a bad click click click noise coming from the axle while it was spinning. Glad I spent $285.00 for that option. Anyway my brother ( a mechanic) said ford has had a huge problem with the limited slip wearing out fast. Mine has 31,000 on it and has never been abused. Jeez I can't get this thing fixed enough before the warranty runs out. I'll let you know It's going in this thursday...

Oh and before I found this out, the truck would just start shaking while you drive maybe once every 3 weeks, bad, where you can't look out the mirrors any of them( starts shaking then goes away after about 3 or 4 minutes.) figured maybe it was a seized up U Joint. Had the same vibration on an old chevelle and took the driveshaft out and couldn't even move the rear joint.

And almost always shudders when you back up (like out of a parking space where your turning) then drive forward. I just figured it was the rear brakes hanging up a little bit but now I am thinking it's the rear end.... We'll see

I hate to say it but I am real close to trading this truck in for a new Chevy.

Same problem

I have a similar problem as to what you talked about at the end of your post. My 99 supercab has a vibration or rumble noise coming from the rear end when I start from a dead stop and am turning. I had the SOP clutch pack replaced once already and it fixed it for a while but it is doing it again. I need help too. Am I going to have to replace this thing every 10 to 15K miles? My warranty is almost out so I am going to get it replaced again.

Clutch pack is wore out .

That's what the diagnosis revealed (like it wasn't obvious). Going in tuesday to be replaced. I asked the service guy what the heck caused it to wear out so fast he had no answers.

I asked him what I could do to keep it from happening again he said change the rear end oil every 12,000 miles, like that's gonna happen. It says in my owners manual not to change or even check the axle fluids. so why should I change it every 9 months....

Anyway it went bad at about 25,000 miles, and it's a 500 dollar repair. When the warranty runs out on it and this does it again I think I'll take a 50 cent welding rod to the differential and maybe that will fix it. Dang it I paid $285 dollar option to have both tires spin and they dam well are gonna !!

Wink Luck

I will say this is pure luck, just got my truck back from shop after I upgraded the gears to 4.10ls, the old gears (3.55ls) looks new front and rear there´s even the chalk mark´s, the truck was built to my spec´s, just had to change the pitman arm two weeks after I got it .

like I posted elsewhere......75W140 is the devil. We never had this many problems before 1997 and the introduction of synthetic (inferior) hypoid gear oil.

Got my truck back from the dealer today here goes, clutches were worn removed carrier and replaced them shimmed the axles in .010 of an inch, replaced leaking axle seals filled with 75w140 add friction modifier test drive was ok.

Well it does not shudder when you back up and take off now. So I guess it's fixed for now. I am scared to get on it and see what happens afraid it'll break... and I don't think the axle seals were leaking (had one of the disc's off and looked dry to me ) probably said that to get Ford to pay for new ones good idea to replace stuff like that while you got it apart..

Anyhow I'm trucking again, nice to give back the loaner taurus.

I've got the same problem with 84K. The reason to change every 12K is so it doesn't happen again.(fingers crossed)
Axle seals were replaced because they pulled the axles to change the clutches. Be glad they changed them.
