4X4 question

I had my 4X4 truck up in the air the other day and I manually rotated the front wheels. I noticed what appeared to be a sleeve rotating, (there were a couple of boots on this sleeve also) that was part of the front driveshaft. There was also a very slight "grinding" sound coming from these sleeves when I rotated the wheels. It sounded kind of like the outer sleeve is rotating around a stationary piece of metal.

My question is: is this sleeve supposed to rotate, or are my hub not disengaging. and should there be a slight grinding sound?

Thanks!

Doug,

What you are hearing is normal. The front axle is splined to the hub so when you rotate the wheel the Drive shaft turns. The gring sound mught be the rubber boot flexing or the sound of the spider gears walking inside the diff.
