Front wheel clank
Last night I developed what I can only describe as a clank in the front left wheel area of my 97 4x4. It happened after I turned a corner and continued for about 1.5 miles until I got home. I had the tires rotated and balanced 2 days before and it sounded like a lug nut had come off and was bouncing around inside the center cap. After looking I found it not to be that so I was thinking maybe something in the front axle joints? This morning I was going to take it in to the shop but it has mysteriously stopped. I was on pavement the whole time but I guess it was possible for a rock to be in the wheel somewhere but it is highly unlikely given the shape of the factory wheels. It definately wasn't just a rock or anything in the tire, it had a definite metallic thud/clunk. It seemed to be the worse in the 10-15 mph range. Any ideas? I don't know what it would sound like if something in the front axle was getting ready to let go, I'm hoping and have fingers crossed that it was just a rock that somehow fell out when I pulled into my driveway since it seems to have gone away this morning.
