leak in front of rear differential....
I've got 8000+ miles on my SCrew and was puttin a lock on my spare and saw a leak where the driveshaft enters the rear differential. Doesn't look too far progressed.
What I'm wonderin is a while back I got 2 wheels off the road turning around and could'nt see a drainage ditch in the grass
so with 2 wheels on the road 2 rode thru the ditch, Very slowly- like 2 mph, the front didn't hit but rear shock mount (which sticks down quite a bit) caught the top edge of the concrete pipe and bent it slightly.
Since the truck was listing at a pretty good angle at the time as you can imagine, the body torqued enough for the bed to contact the cab slightly on the top on the passengers side.
Having done plenty of offroading I can tell you this was nothing, but could it have anything to do with the driveshaft leak??
All I need is for the dealer to see the bent shock mount (and say I went blastin thru somthin) and it's my fault.... So much for "FORD TOUGH"...
This is bigger heavier, longer truck than I've ever had so I suppose there's a 1st. time for everything but, uh, can anybody tell me one way or the other??
Thanks,
WT

Ahhh, the notorious pinion seal leak. See my other thread concerning this.

I just purchased a 2001 4x4 F-150 SuperCrew and I only have 1300 miles on it. Same problem, Rear end is leaking. But I bought it from a dealer with 200 miles on it. So I would guess that someone else may have test drove it and did a little burnout test and had wheel hop. But now I know the problem and the fix. Thanks all. Thank god for warranties to cover our butts!

I haven't been pushin mine at all. Other than a couple of dOnut episodes in the snowy supermarket parking lot there's been no wheel spin on mine at all. Maybe like i said when my body twisted goin thru the ditch the shaft may have tweaked the seal ( i don't know if the shaft floats totally free of the axel} but more likely it's just a weak link in the design chain, so any number of things can cause it to fail.
