I have a 1997 f150 s/c with the mechanical 4X4 shift. It has always been stiff or difficult to engage the 4x4, & is becoming worse. I have read the posts regarding the electronic shift but would appreciate any suggestions or comments.

 

Lubrication. When my manual shifter got stiff in my '95 and was actually almost impossible to put into 4WD, I took it in to the shop. The machanic just greased up the linkage for the transfer case shifter ubderneath. It should be that simple for you, too.
