Question why does ford install the 3.55 rears?

Why does Ford install 3.55 rears as standard when GM and Dodge both use 3.73 gears???? The 3.73 get better mileage and performance. Is there an engine wear issue??

My guess is that Ford feels that 3.55s are the best compromise between performance and fuel economy. I think Chevy has to use lower gears because of their engines. If you look at the dyno numbers the Chevys are more of a high revving engine, similar to a sports car. The Fords are more like a traditional truck engine. They make their power and torque at a much lower rpm than the Chevys. I think that is why they can get away with higher gearing. It's all about compromise. I'm like you and most enthusists however I would rather have lower gears and more performance, even if it cost me a couple of mpg. You know, I bet the Chevy guys are wondering why they can't have 4.10s
