My 98 did, at up 45 MPH just gently pull the lever down and presto it was in 4X4, I loved the way that truck shifted into 4X4, this 97 I got is about aggravating

Switch?

JMC, do you know what the name of the part is? I'm going to try to call my Ford dealer today and check on one if you can tell me, hopefully this weekend I can attempt to put it on if they have one in stock... Thanx

SOHC,

The Shop manual calls it the 3 position switch for Manual Shift on the fly. Have you doen all the tests to be sure it is malfunctionning? I would hate for you to replace the switch and later findout thet it was a cut or grounded wire.

JMC,

The 3-position swith, is that the end result of the 4X4 engagement to make the light in the dash come on, or is it part of the proccess to engage it into 4x4, to where as if the switch is bad it would not shift right? or is it just the thing to iluminate the dash lights?

My97,

The switch tells the GEM that the truck is in 4x4 mode. The GEM then grounds a relay for the magnetic clutch coil in the T-case and the solenoid for the front axle vacuum motor which engages the front axle. On the 97 models it also tells the PCM when the truck is in 4Lo so it can adjust the tranny shift points and engine parameters.

JMC,

Is ther anything Ford changed in the shifting of the 4X4 from the '97-'98?

Would the linkage from a '98 bolt right in to the '97?

I will look at it some more today and get back on here tonight, thanks for the help so far.

Brian
