Unhappy Transfer case broke

I was on the highway today doing 60mph with my 97 f150 4x4 manual transmision, I shifted from 5th to 4th and there was nothing there. None of the gears worked. I coasted off the freeway and found that 4x4 low worked so I drove off the freeway like that. Now it is in 4x4 low regardless of where the manual transfer case selector is. I had it towed home but i don't know what is wrong with it. It drives fine in 4low but even keeps the front hubs locked when the selector is in 2 wheel and the 4x4 light is off. Has anyone had something similar happen or know what I need to replace. Is it just a selector in the transfer case or is the whole transfer case shot.
Thanks
Mike

Bummer. About all I can think of would be linkage. Let's move this up & see if we can get any replies.

BTW, welcome to F150online.

Mike D.,

When you write "and there was nothing there" do you mean it felt like you were in Neutral? Was there a noise when this happened? When you shift the T-case do you feel the system engaging the gears? Were you in 4Hi when this happened?

Regards

It was exactly like I was in neutral and now when the shifter movers through the gears there doesn't seem to be much resistance so I think it is linkage also, I've heard of the older f150's having problems with this but not the 97 and newer, anyone heard of this problem, I'm pulling the transfer case out in the next two days as soon as I have time so I will find out.
