Tire/drivetrain whine ?
This bothers me. After 45 k miles this noise started. Sounds like a turbine whine, speed dependent - in neutral or drive, braking or not. I had 2 shops check it out - could not pinpoint it. They think it's the tires.
I asked them to put it on a lift and run the truck with wheels spinning - they refused - it would put a code in the ABS computer, did not know how to reset.
Had them open up the diferential - nothing wrong found. Same noise. I can't tell if it's coming from the front or the back. Does anybody have anything similar ? This whine is there at all speeds - as soon as the wheels turn - I can hear it. Just changes pitch with speed.

No, nothing was replaced. Just started after
a long trip from TX to NY and back.
The shop said that bad shocks caused the tire
being slightly damaged and that's what makes the sound. Hard to believe.
I already put new shocks on.

Have some one ride with you in the back and move around to see where the noise is coming from, do this on a smooth empty road.
first thing to look at stones stuck in the tread. check for tire damage.
next is wheel bearings running dry, wash them out and re-grease with molybdenum graphite grease.
check to see if the calipers move easy.
next swap over two tires to see if the noise moves.
remove drive shaft and check joints for any stiffness, can't be lubed have to replace.
Keep us up dated.

I'm having the same issue. Sounds exactly like tire whine but I don't ever remembet hearing it before, which makes me paranoid. Totally speed dependent, not engine. I've heard that some tires get louder as they wear which may be the case. My terra grapplers are about half shot now. You said you made a long haul yourself? Last month I had my rear diff serviced and it all checked out fine. This month I had my tranny flushed by a tranny shop and they said it all checked out fine. Too bad I don't have a set of stock, bald, quiet tires to throw on and find out if it is indeed the tires. Keep us posted.
