Question does this make sense????

hello all. I just bought this truck last week and i love it so
far but i am puzzled by something. it is a 4x4 as my login name
says 5.4,auto,leather,etc...but i believe it has an open rear diff.
that doesnt make any sense to me. it has a factory class 3
tow hitch so i assume it has the towing package, which
puzzles me even more. it has 2 tags on the diff but the door
jam code is 19, or i guess its a "1" it looks like that letter with
the bottom missing. How could Ford even make a v8 4wd truck
with an open rear????? im a big ford fan but thats crazy and im
pissed! it has the 8.8 in front and i assume it is open as well
so i guess i have a 2wd all on the passenger side truck? i think
the tcase is a bw4406 anybody know the gear ratio in these?
thanks

Yeah I know what you mean. I have to put mine in 4WD to get out of the simplest situations during the winter.

Lightbulb 98lariat4x4-

The vast majority have an open differential; the 19 is just that, a open-3.55. The "H" is the most common first character for the LS.

ya, mine's a 4.2 and it's the same way. What i would do is put a powertraxx unit in (which i am very seriously considering).

It was an option on my sticker. Cheap too, for the benefits.

Post No unit!!!

I really don't understand why a lot of people keep telling people to just throw a powertrax unit in the back. They do not make a lock-right or no-slip traction devise for the 9.75" ford differential which 98lariat4x4 is sure to have. From my knowledge, only Auburn, Ford and maybe one other manufacturer make limited slips for the 9.75. And yes, you are correct in assuming that the front is completely open.

I thought all of the F150's had the Ford 8.8" rear axle... i didn't think ford had another axle option, except when you get into the super duty & sterling series trucks

Hey every just found out new information.
I have the 1998 ford f150 Lariat 5.4lt 4x4 and over the years I have had this truck (2007-) I have done most of the service needed as its (216-275,000km+)

Transmission was serviced just to be proactive.. Confused the guys as they knew it was a f150 but the truck has a f250/350/excursion transmission. (stock) So apparently that was an option. So I was happy in that part that I have a more durable transmission.

now, I just got all the gear I need to change the rear end fluid which included a new Differential cover as so I thought was a correct cover but it was a 10 bold pattern and mines a 12 bolt. As this was another extra option in the trucks line during thee 1998 year is offers the Sterling Rear end which is normally in the f250/350/excursions. Another plus for me, my f150 is on steroids.

So hope this helps you guys out as well.
--I have yet to do the front axle change.

Your truck sounds very similiar to a F-250LD or F-150 7700 (4R100 trans, Sterling rear) ... does it have the 7 lug wheels?
