So I just picked up a 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 and its the ext fx4 4x4 model. Has the 9.75 rear diff. I picked this up yesterday 2/25/18 and had to drive it 150 miles home.

As I drove I noticed little bit of vibration I think maybe either a tire is not balanced correctly or the u joints are starting to go. In either case Im still going to get the u joints replaced and since I do not have a press etc for that job, I called a shop to inquire about price.

lol The shop guy said that in that year 2004 , FORD decided to make the u joints un-serviceable so that you could not just replace them but rather replace the entire drive shaft.!!!!!!

For a steel shaft its about 400 bucks to have mone made. Is this true that you can not replace the u joints on this factory drive shaft?

That kit is for the rear u-joint, I don't know if the front is the same or not.

couple of additional questions..

Autozone lists U Joints for 2004 f150. Would these u joints also be like the neasco kit? I found another mechanic that says if a parts store lists the part even if it is staked they should work.

Also, I think I read that 2007 drive shaft which has serviceable u joints would work on a 2004 is this true? If so I will just find one in a yard replace the joints and slap it in.

 

You would still need the tools to cut the stakes out, read the thread I linked.

A 2007/2008 driveshaft is compatible as long as it's from a 4x4 with the same wheelbase and shaft type - 1 or 2 piece.
