8.8" Rear Diff Rebuild Options

I have a 99 f150 with an 8.8" stock diff. It has 280,000km on it and has never been rebuilt; as such I am pretty sure the clutch packs on the LSD are toast. I am thinking all the torque is delivered to the path of least resistance. I've felt the *** end start to kick out on me while going up grades on the highway a couple times... my newer work truck never does this. Not a good feeling!

Has anyone gone aftermarket or am I better off rebuilding stock?

After some research, I was considering either rebuilding it stock, or going with an Eaton TruTrac LSD so far. It appears there are quite a few options out there for differentials... Yukon, Eaton: posi, Elocker, detroit locker- just to name a few. I'm not drag racing or doing extreme off-roading with it. Mainly just need to drive through deep snow and handle ice half decently.

The truck is primarily used on the highway, I live where there is a lot of snow and ice, so traction is important to me.

What would you guys recommend?

Any input much appreciated. Cheers!

Years ago I had a truck with a Detroit locker in it, I loved it. The only problem was on ice it hated to turn unless it was in 4-WD. The Detroit locker is much more positive than the Ford LSD. If the budget is there for it you might want to look into a selectable locker.

Not racing or heavy wheeling then save the money and rebuilt the stock unit. Ran my stock unit in the big truck with 37's for years then upgraded to 9.75 and ran that stock unit till I sold it and had not problems.

How many miles on the stock diff? Ford Trac-locks are pretty solid units.

Thanks!!

The conversion from KM to miles works out to 174,000 miles on the diff. The truck was not maintained when I bought it. The engine oil had been neglected for so long it was sludged and the engine spun a rod bearing. The transfer case and diff fluid was pretty black as well!

Rebuilt the engine and transmission and proceeded to change all fluids. The only fluid that came out of this truck that wasn't black was from the front diff.

It's easy enough to tell if it is working. Step on the gas accelerating around a corner and it will try to lock up if it is working properly. I can easily tell that mine is still working. I think the stock units are much less expensive too. At least I checked into it when I had a mark VIII and the ford unit was much less than other brands and it had the 8.8 rear.
