Question Rear End

I need some help when I come to a stop my truck feels like it stops twice in the rear end not all the time but most of the time .
Fast or Slow stops it makes no difference.
I feel and hear a second bump when I come to a stop.I need to know that to look for to help trobleshoot this problem.

Thank You

Question

I have replaced my slip yoke 3 times on my 97 xlt 4x4 auto. It feels just like a rear end problem when they start to go out. I think it is a lub problem, of course ford has no clue as to what it is #*!&@. Check your slip yoke and have your mechanic check for cracks under the trans mtg brkt, exhaust and frame, yes frame. Some people have had to repl their frames. Mtg is too rigid, not allowing flex. Lack of ford stress analysis.

My 94 Explorer and 96 Bronco both do this. It kinda feels like someone bumps you when you stop. And does the same when you take off. Ford mechanic told me it is the slip joints on the drive shaft sticking. If I get the time this weekend I am going to tear them down and grease them up. I have to take the rubber boots loose to do this, but should be an easy fix. I will let you know how it turns out.

Robin,
My 97 did the same thing... they replaced the slip yoke twice to no avail... Turned out to be the pinion yoke on the rear end.

KSMike,
Can't help with the the Bronco, but on the Explorer, there is a TSB on that problem... Assuming it doesn't do it all the time, the TSB is for fuel sloshing in the tank. If it does it all the time, it's probably the problem you described.

I took the driveshaft out of our 94 explorer and checked to see if the slip yoke was lubed. It appeared to have plenty of grease on it and the teflon coating was intact. It even operated smoothly out of the explorer. I put some new grease on it and put it all back together not expecting any improvement, but the mysterious "thump" was gone. So, who knows? Im going to try the same fix on my Bronco this weekend. I dont think it is gas sloshing in the tank, because I would have surely noticed it before 30,000 or so miles.

I finally got the time to re-lube the slip yoke on my rear driveshaft of my 96 Bronco (40,000 miles). The "bump" in the rear end is finally gone!! Yeeeehawww It's like new again. Thanks to somebody on this board for the tip!

I get that that "something shifting in the bed" thunk AFTER I stop noise too. Sometimes a good second after I have stopped. Since it is strongest with a 7/8 full tank of gas and I never hear it with less than 3/4 tank I'm pretty sure it's just the gas moving around.
