Rear end backlash
You have to move the carrier to the passenger side to tighten up the backlash or reverse to loosen. This is done by removing shims on the passenger side and adding them to the driver's side or as the last Ford rear that I tore into (74 Ford car) turn the threaded caps on the ends of the carrier to move it. After the backlash is correct, check the wear pattern. If that isn't correct, you have to use shims to move the pinion forward or back as required to get the pattern correct. If you are not meticulous or experienced, get a professional to do it. I muddled through 2 diff rebuilds way back in the 70's. Both turned out ok for some reason. LOL
