Rear-End Clunk
I've had a rear end clunk since I've had my truck. I've mentioned it to the dealer on at least two occasions and received back the ever-frustrating "Could not verify conern." It happens more when it's cold and when I come to a full stop at least a little aggressively. Anyone else have this?
It's a 99 S/C 4.6L 2WD 3.55 4R70W

The problem could be loose u-bolts on the springs (at the bottom of the diff.-where u-bolts clamp around axle housing). Also, could also be loose, broken, or defective trans. mount (on the bottom of trans.). Is the trans. leaking @ the rear seal? If so, this could be a driveshaft problem. By you post, I would check u-bolts & trans. mount first.

I too, have had a clunk in the rear end, usually when turning in either direction. I, too, have had 2 "unable to verify" dealings...the truck is a stock '98 4x4, off-road package, 17" wheels, no apparent loose body parts, 5.4l, bedliner, yadda yadda. No other modifications. Anyone else w/ similar probs and solutions???? PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!
I too have a cluck in what appears to be the rear driveline. I get it mostly when I accelerate through a sharp curve or when I start off from a slow or dead stop. I can get it not to make the noise by pressing the gas pedal light and slow. I asked the dealer and he told me that it was "normal". It does seem to be getting worse so I am taking it in on 8/22. If they fix it and I will post what they did. He also told me that "greasing" the yolk will quiet it down for a while.

Thanks, and please let me know what (if anything) helps. I don't know about you, but I cant stand it when the dealers say "its normal", makes me want to ask - so you settle for a piece of s**t becasue its normal??? Anyhow, thanks again.

I posted this a few months ago. The lariet had a clunk--starting-stopping-turning--for a year or so. One day, a buddy asked if I knew the spare tire was loose & swinging a couple inches. Nuf said?? The clunk hasn't been back.

Try grabing the top of each rear wheel and shacking the rear wheel(enough to get the whole back of the truck rocking hard) and listen for the clunk or wheel movement. If you have either take it to the dealer, neither is good! There should be no play, at least there is no spec for the play. My dealer is replacing the whole rear due to multipal problems inside the rear (In the shop now. good luck

After spending 5.5 hours watching TV at the dealership today, they told me the "clunk" was coming from the transfer case. They need a WHOLE day to fix it he said, so I have to take it back next Tuesday. It is covered under my extended warranty, glad I got that. But... I will let you know if they actually locate and fix the problem next week.

My last post said there should be no side to side play in the wheels, but dealer said the play is normal! checked this on 4 new f150's on the lot and they all had the same play! They replaced the rear before they figured it out! $1100.00 later (ford picked up all but $175.00) now I don't know what to think about the clunk I still have......
I had a driveline clunk that could be heard when coasting to a stop. It could also be heard when I was stopped with my foot on the brake and changed gears (automatic: reverse to drive after backing up, etc.). I have the one piece aluminum driveshaft, and the dealership told me it was unsafe to drive. They replaced the entire driveshaft assembly under warranty, and it's been fine ever since.
Hope this helps,

OK...
After going without my truck for 2 days, I finally have it back from the dealer. They replaced the rear trans seal and the fron transfer case seal. The clunk seems to be gone, but there is still a little play in the driveline... I guess that is somewhat noremal. They said the blown seal was allowing fluid into places that it was not suuposed to be, and that was causing the noise.
Prior to this I did notice an EXTREMELEY small amount of trans fluid weeping from a little tube on the transfer case.
Hope this helps some.
