Question Front drivetrain noise.

Hey guys. My truck's been doing this for a while and I haven't got around to investigating it since it doesn't seem to affect the driveability.

While coasting to a stop or while braking, I'm hearing what sounds like a wheel bearing grinding or a warped rotor. Kind of a pulsing, dragging noise. This is whether I'm on the brakes or not, and I don't feel it through the brake pedal or the steering wheel. I do feel it through the floorboard on my shoe. The most puzzling thing is that I don't notice any drag shen stopping. The truck rolls to a smooth stop and doesn't seem to be affected by the noise.

It is a 4X4 so I've thought about the axles, too. The sound comes from the driver's side front wheel area. Other than hearing the sound, I haven't noticed any other problems associated with it. I suppose I should jack the wheel up and turn it by hand to see if I can pinpoint the location of the noise.

The truck is still under warranty, but I don't really want to mess with taking it into the dealer, and having to leave it there while they figure out the problem. I'm pretty busy this time of year and I doubt they would give me another truck as a loner if they needed to keep it for a couple of days.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Sven

What a coincidence, my truck just developed that exact same problem the other day. I haven't gotten around to posting about it yet though. I looked and looked to try and find the problem but I haven't been able to find anything. I need help as bad as you do on this.

I have a noise that I have been hearing for over a year and this might be similar to the noise you are hearing. My noise is directly related to the drivetrain and I can only hear it from about 35 mph on down. It first started out like a squeeking scraping noise and now sounds like crickets chirping( well sorta) and as the speed of the vehicle slows down so does the noise although the speed of the noise seems faster than the speed of the vehicle. I had the ujoints checked out-all ok. I posted a message to a master tech at the blue oval site. Now it's hard to diagnose a problem without actually hearing it but I think this guy might be on to something. He stated that one possible source is the splines on the transmission output shaft and transfer case input shaft. He said there is no fluid in this area and he has seen a lot of these build up a little rust causing a squeek similar to a u-joint. You have to pull the transfer case to inspect and lube the splines and use only Ford slip yoke lube because it is teflon based and will stay on the splines. I haven't had mine checked out yet, kinda wondering what this could cost, has anyone ever heard of this?

God I hope not, pulling the trans case will be a big pain in the ***, not to mention expensive if you have someone do it for you. That is one job that I won't be looking forward to.

Well, at least I'm not the only one. My truck is still under warranty, so I can get it fixed when I have the time. I may do some investigating this weekend when I'm home to try to pinpoint the origin of the noise. To me it sounds like the front driver's side wheel area, not the transfer case area.

I'll let you know if I find anything. Keep me posted on your progress, too.

Well I finally got a chance to look at the truck today. Pulled the wheel off and it looks to me to be a wheel bearing.
