Vibration above 65 MPH
Vibration above 65 MPH
I am posting this because yesterday I scoured the web trying to find an answer to my problem and didn't have much luck. So hopefully this info will help someone out in the future.
So I started noticing a vibration sound when driving above 65. I couldn't really feel anything, just heard it. At first I thought it was my mud tires being all noisy and what not. I put more air in them, and that didn't help.
Didn't worry about it for a while. Then I got under the truck last weekend and noticed that the rear output shaft was still leaking. I had posted a video of it here but didn't get a response.
Also started wondering about how bad it was that my drive shaft slip yoke was pulled out about 1.25" farther than it was at stock. This was due to the 4" lift on my truck.
I decided to get a longer drive shaft made. Not too bad on price, $277 for new tube and new u-joints with a nice shiny coat of black paint.
I was talking to the guy that works there and he told me that the vibration was most likely coming from the bad angle on my drive shaft. Since rancho decided not to give me angled blocks for the rear, the pumpkin still sits fairly level with the ground, which in turn puts a lot of stress on the u-joints. he said if it was the problem, then when i put the new drive shaft on, the problem would go away... for now...
Sure enough, i put the new shaft on and there was no more vibration. I am going back on monday so that he can measure my driveline angles. he is going to fab my up an angle piece for my blocks so that the pumpkin is rotated up toward the transfer case more. He said the difference in the angles of the pumpkin side versus the transfer case side should be 1 degree, no more than that.
Also, I changed out the fluid in my transfer case while i was at it. It sort of had a brownish tinge to it. To be expected though considering I towed 10,000 lbs, through the south last summer.
So anyways, after doing the driveshaft, and replacing the rear out put shaft seal on the transfer case, there is no more leak, and no more vibrations. and once I get the angle pieces from my driveshaft guy, I shouldn't have any more problems in the future either.
I hope this helps someone in the future. If so, you are more than welcome.
