4x4 not acting right

Alright guys, Im a newbie here cuz I just bought a 2004 FX4 4x4. Here is the issue: When I put it in 4Lo, the dash light come on. When I put it in 4Hi, the light does not come on. But when in 2Hi, it sounds as if the 4WD is engaged. It makes a low grumble and grinding noise when I turn from a dead stop. Plus it seems like it decelerates quick when I let off the gas. Has anyone else had these issues? Thanks

There are a number of issues that it could be. First, does the truck actually go into low range when you put it in 4Lo?

Assuming it does, you will need to jack up one front wheel for the next test. It doesn't matter which one. With one front tire off the ground, start the engine, transmission in park, ESOF in 2Hi. Crawl under the driver's side and locate the front drive shaft off the TC. Be careful not to burn yourself on the exhaust. Reach up and try to spin the forward drive shaft. It should spin easily, and the half shaft on the wheel you lifted will spin with it. The lifted tire should not spin.

Now switch the ESOF to 4Hi. This time the forward drive shaft should not spin. Switch the ESOF to 4Lo and again the forward drive shaft should be locked. Try to spin the lifted tire, it should only turn a couple degrees until it locks (drive line slack).

Lower the front tire and raise the other. The tire should be locked to the half shaft and will only turn a few degrees. Switch the ESOF to 2Hi and the tire should spin free while the half shaft remains stationary.

Report back on what you find.

The 4Lo does work and the light comes on. When I tapped the shift motor the 4Hi light came on. Then it started all over again. So I am just going to replace the motor. It has the BorgWarner 4406 Im assuming. The number on the motor is 44-06-648-007-b. It has the 9 pin connector. I am having trouble trying to locate one though for my 04 FX4 with a 5.4. All of the ones I have seen are 7 pin. Any thoughts?
