Transfer case problems

Hi all, My father has a 2002 F-150 with the 4.2 V6, an auto trans and 4wd. He is having some problems getting it in and out of 4wd and I was wondering about changing the transfer case fluid. Just wondering what is recommended to put in. Also are there any other problems that could cause hard engagement?

It's a floor lever. The truck is an XL and has no options whatsoever. The case says borg-warner on it but i'm just wondering what model. And if anyone knows why it would be shifting hard?

I believe it's a BW 4406.

Crawl under with some PB Blaster and start hosing down the linkage. It can and does corrode.

Ok I looked that case up on google and it looks to be the one. Thanks for that. I will look at the linkage this weekend and see if that looks to be the problem. That would make sense. I figured something was up because my stepdads F-250 which is newer shifts like a dream.
