Front Half shafts 2001

My left front axle has started making noise. Looks like the outer boot is leaking. Probabaly be replacing shortly. Only question I hav is can they be replaced without dropping the suspension. From what I have read most sources show dropping the spindle. Has any one done these without dropping the spindles? I would really rather not run teh risk of damaging a ball joint with a pickle hammer, if I don't have to.

take the 36mm axle nut off. Undo both sway bar end links and swing the sway bar up. remove the 6 12mm 12 point bolts where the cv connects to the diff and it will slide right out. Depending on the rims on your truck you can do it without even taking a wheel off.

Did the axles this afternoon. Three hours start to finish. !2mm 12 pt socket, and 36 mm socket. Did however find out that the parts houses, all list an incorrect nut for teh spindle end. They list a 3/4-16 with 1 1/16 hex, actually 24-2 mm with 36 mm hex.
