You will also need carrier bearings, a press to install the bearings, a way to measure backlash, possible shims to adjust backlash, rtv for the diff cover, and I'd suggest axle seals too while you are in there.

Also, unless you're set on the trac lok, I'd suggest a Detroit Truetrac. It doesn't have clutches to wear out, you can use normal gear lube, and it performs better. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Ehhh ive put it to thought but its also almost double the price. Im a young 17yr old guy who makes minimum wage and would rather just buy the trac lok.

Do you know which bearings I would need? Maybe both.

The trac lok will still work fine if you are on a budget. You will need the 2 carrier bearings and races. They don't have to be anything fancy. I got mine from the local Napa.

Another option would be a "lunchbox" type of locker. You would install it in place of the spider gears in the open diff, and you don't have to replace the carrier bearings or re-shim the carrier. Just a suggestion.

why would he have to reset the backlash? hes still using the same gears, just switching out the carrier.

as long has he puts the shims back in the same spot, everything should line up right?

You are correct in theory. But, that is assuming that the new carrier, the new bearings, and the new races are machined to the exact same specs as the old ones. We are are taking about thousandths of an inch. It should always be checked after a swap like this. It's much easier to check and adjust during the installation, than to fix a bigger problem later.

Kit or junk yard swap. Sounds the easiest to me...I'm looking around the area loosely for one myself.
