Howling/ Grinding

Was driving to work and the truck felt sluggish, almost like the e-brake was dragging. Stopped at a light and when I started to accelerated, I got a little bit of tire chatter from the rear. Stopped at another light, went to accelerate, motor bogged down and wouldn't roll then heard a loud bang like something broke loose and started to accelerate normally. Went to back in to the parking space and was making noise. Co-worker said it sounded like a fender rubbing on a tire. Drove home with no issues, truck ran normal.

Rear brakes (disk) were close to needing replaced so I changed them. Jacked the backend up and checked to see if rear wheel bearings were bad. Everything felt tight with no play.

Next day took several tries to put it in to park, truck would roll backward a few feet and made a clicking sound.

Now it goes into park with no problem and shifts into gear fine but I have a howling/grinding sound when going 15-20 MPH and feels a little sluggish almost like the e-brake is grabbing.

Any ideas?

How many miles?

Sounds like something in the rear end to me. Are you noticing any moisture around the pinion seal or on the ground beneath that area? Could be pinion bearings or other rear end related issues. Sounds like something is binding up back there. Any moisture wicking up the axle?

I'd check that first.

A little over 102k miles. No leaks or moisture. Is there a way to tell if it's the pinion bearing without tearing into it?

Turns out it was the tranny. Not one issue for 4 months and then lost 1st gear this morning.

See just this statement I was going to suggest checking the tranny, sounds like the parking pin (not sure thats the correct term) was not engaging properly when you put it in park, and if you are park on even a slight slop the truck will roll.

Glad you got it fixed.
