axle ratio
Is it possible to get the 3.73 limited-slip rear end with a 2001 F150 XLT, off-road package, 5.4 V-8??? I was checking out the vehicle configuration page on Ford's website. -it wouldn't let me choose this combination. the best I could do was a 3.55 LS.
Since the 2000 models, you're required to get the 7700# GVWR package to get the 3.73 LSD axle.
Edit - I moved from Minneapolis last year, went to the U from '93 to '99. How's the weather?

what is included in the 7700# package?? I'm sure I don't need anything in that package, but I would really like to have the 3.73 LS.
P.S. weather's been great for an October in MN! 70's and 80's all week.

O.K. A real rookie question.
What do the different gear ratio's mean/do?
I have the 3.55LS. 3.55 was standard on the sport model. I ordered the LS presumably to make it a better 4x4.
My other question is that I ordered LS and the window sticker says LS, but the owners manual refers to it as Traction-Lok. Have they changed something or is it the same thing?

The 7700 package gets you LT tires, 4-leaf rear springs, a bigger frame, 'approval' to mount a snow plow, a stiffer ride, 4-wheel disk brakes, and a nice 7700 sticker on the tailgate
. It only comes in the Auto 5.4 3.73 variety.
JD: Ya done good, lad -- as the 3.55 is the standard for HD towing. When you order the 7700, you up the tire size by about half of what you'd expect to gain with the 3.73. Ford tries to keep the highway cruise in the 2000-2300 RPM range, and your set-up will tow quite a load without any complaints. Limited Slip is standard issue for any off-roading -- with some actually wishing for LS in the front axle (until they actually Drive one and discover that it turns like a boat).

JDF- the Traction-Lok is the LS (limited slip)."What do the ratios mean/do" = it is the ratio of incoming (driveshaft/pinion) compared to outgoing (ring/axle) transferred inside the rear end through gears. Higher #s = lower ratios and visa versa. The different gears are used for different needs. Lower gears (higher #s) are quicker during acceleration, aid in towing, and lower top speed. Gear differences also affect mgg and rpms. Just a brief, non-technical overview.
