Question 3:55 to 3.73?

I am thinking about making this change to get some more get go out of my truck. i think this might be the best way to accomplish what i want. From what i read, this change in gears will increase take off and make my truck feel more alive. i do not want to put anything in my engine, like headers or anything like that. i will eventually get a supercharger but that is in the distant future. any advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

That moderate of a change will make very little difference for the money and hassle. You may want to at least consider going to the 4.10s. There is still plenty of top end and changes of .50 or so become quite noticeable and cost-effective.

I agree with Max - go to 4.10's. They make a big difference and hwy noise/mileage is almost unchanged.

Thank you guys. i think i will opt or the 4.10. the only reason i thought of 3.73, is because that is what the 2001 L has now.

I went to a 3.73 from a 3.55 on my 2001 supercrew on Friday...and it is a noticable change. the rpm has raised about 300 rpm's and it still cruises down the freeway nice. i feel more off the line and when passing at higher speeds. I think in my case [stock wheels and tires] the 4.10 would be too much for overall driveability. The 4.10s would be perfect if you are going install larger tires. Note: I was looking for a minor change and I got just what I wanted.. also, the 3.73 is offered from Ford in a 9.75" in the rear and in the front. In order to go to 4.10 the gears would have to be purchased aftermarket......also the speedo can be calibrated to a 3.73 gear with the WDS via the PCM and a chip isn't needed to correct the speedo.....There is a possibility Ford is going to offer a 3.73 gear in the near future..it is already in the data base of the WDS [ford scan tool we use]
IT all depends on what you are looking for, 4.10's would give you the most noticeable change. I fortunately did not have any money out of pocket with the 3.73 gear swap, which made it an easy choice.

superdave666, e-mail me at veloci@gateway.net and give me some details on installation and cost. you mentioned no money out of pocket with the 3.73 swap, how did you manage that? let me know, i would like to do this swap next week. i am looking for a small change also, so maybe i should stick to 3.73.
