4x4 wanting to lock

Alright fellas. I have a 2004 scab which is 4x4. Tonight on my way home from work I noticed a grinding noise coming from the driver front wheel. When I got home I check to see if it was a hub bearing going out but it was fine with no play. Then I decided to try put it in 4x4 to see what would happen. It stopped the grinding noise when driving down the road. I believe the front driver side is trying to engage while driving down the road. Anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

More than likely, it's your solenoid; they've been known to take a dump with no warning. you can get it changed at the dealer (expect to pay around $200 for that), or buy it from the dealer for around $20-$30, and do it yourself. The solenoid is located behind the battery, and isn't too hard to change.

I just have to ask, so I'm going to sound foolish, but everyone says the vac solenoid is behind the battery, what I have behind my battery is a small vacuum holding tank. Why does everybody keep saying the solenoid is behind the battery, when it is actually beside the battery, against the fire wall below the wiper cowl, just to the left of the computer? Am I the only one with this set up or am I looking at the wrong part? Sorry, but I beeen feeeling kinda stuuupeed tooodaay

One could say that the solenoid is on the firewall behind the battery. Just like one would say that the back seat is behind the front seat. The tendency is to describe things from front to rear. By the same token your vacuum reservoir is beside the battery.
