Question need updated advice on rear end whine!

I recently purchased a 2004 supercrew, I have the tell tale rear end whine I have been reading about. I have found tons of great info on all these threads but still need some advice becuase most info is outdated and open ended. When I purchased the truck the dealer knew about the issue and I told him I wasn't comfortable buying it with this problem. Since there was no warranty left on the truck he wrote me up a special warranty with a guarantee for the rear end for the life of the truck. The driveability of the the truck is great but the noise takes the fun out of driving it. Since I have this extended warranty I want to go back to the dealer and have them fix the problem for good. A lot of the info on this site is hit or miss with regards to fixing the problem, i need someone to tell me what I should have these guys do to take care of the problem for good. Has Ford come up with a sloution or has anyone had sucess with swaping out the guts or a total axle replacement?

Thank you and the info here is great I just need to know what do to in my case.

thats pretty cool that they gave you that kind of warranty if you want it fixed for good and they worked with you like that i would go back and see if they would work with you more like maybe replace the whole rearend with a brand new one and then like a 5 year warranty on it instead of lifetime that would be cool too

Could it be a bearing? I'd check to see if there is any leakage at the pinion and remove the rear wheels and check to see if the axle seals are leaking.

As GLC brought up, it could have aftermarket gears in it. Many aftermarket gears make noise especially the 4.10s and higher numerical ratios.

Not that I know, I had the garage look at everything and they said it was all good, no metal shavings no leaks, gears looked good. They put an additive to quiet things down but it did not work. I know this is a problem with the 04, I am just tring to figure out if I live with it until it gets worse or do I have them swap a new rear end in?
