Steering problem only on start up... clueless

Hi,

I have had some issues with my steering for the past two weeks and yesterday I changed the lower steering shaft which cured most of my problems.

Now I'm left with some kind of loose only on start-up: let's say I start the motor and turn the steering wheel (right or left it doesn't matter) it makes a clunk noise while the steering goes loose for about 10degrees of a turn just like if the was no tooth in the rack and pinion and no power steering. I'm saying this because when this happens the wheels don't seem to turn AT ALL even if I'm turning the steering wheel. Once it happened everything is back to normal with a smooth steering and no play in it. There is no vibration at all.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

So I've narrowed down the problem. There is definitively a loose that comes from the steering column. It's between the steering wheel and the lower steering shaft. While grabbing the lower shaft so it can't turn, the steering wheel CAN turn freely about 5 degrees.

Can it be the locking nut behind the airbag or a bearing that needs replacement?

Anyone?

And the loose is NOT ONLY on start-up. I can definitively feel it at anytime now.
