URGENT!! 4X4 problems
hello, im brand new to this forum stuff but im having some very mysterious 4 wheel drive problems.
A couple weeks ago my 04 f150 4x4 started having problems. as the weather started getting cold (which i believe is the culpret) i was hearing a loud grinding noise in my front wheels. it was metal on metal. i have "shift on the fly" and when i would flip my switch to 4x4 hi the noise would stop until i would switch it back to 2wd. then the noise comes back suddenly. the problem went away for about a week and now, when i needed it most with a foot of snow, I CANT GET MY 4X4 ENGAGED!!!
i hear the clicks when i flip the switch as i slowly apply the gas the two front wheels RELEASE. i am a little on the ticked side as the truck has less than 91000 miles. i keep getting told other fixes from other mechanics and need more input please. i am unsure if my solenoid is frozen or what.
any ideas/fixes would be GREATLY appreciated.
thank you.

Your IWE's are probably shot if they've been grinding for long enough. And yes, a bad solenoid could have caused it. Here's everything you need to know:
