Question Reprogram Spedometer?? 97 and newer

Can you reprogram the spedometor on a 97 and newer f-150 the way you could on the pre 97's? On my 96 I was able to reprogram it for 4.56 gears with out a problem.

Hi Mike,

Up thru & including the 1998 model year on these F-150's, you can still use the same simple reduction gear as always. Starting in the 1999 model year, it *has* to be done in the computer's program.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply Mike.

I guess you must be talking about the 97's and 98's. On my 96 with a 5.8 and E4OD I was able to reprogram the speedometer using the buttons on the speedometer face after putting it into the "program mode". This procedure was done without an aftermarket chip.

Thanks Again

Question

Hey, ksmike...

How do you go into 'program mode'? I've got a '92 (see sig), and I'd like to see if there is anything in there I can tweak...I'm a programmer, so I hafta use my skills on something!

Thanks.

Tom,

Im not sure what years you could program the spedometer, I just know that on my 95 and 96 you could. The programming that I am talking about is only to correct the spedometer for gear or tire size changes. In my case I have 4.56 gears and was able to reprogram for them. The programming is part of the speedometer cluster and not the engine computer. If you need the instructions let me know and I can get them for you.

ksmike...

If it's a big deal, don't worry about it. I just wanna tweak something! I bought the truck used, so I don't have an owners' manual...frustrating.

If you see the instructions lying around, feel free to post them anyway. It'll probably help the other folks, too.

Thanks!

Hi ksmike,

No, I meant on 1998 & earlier models, they can all still be recalibrated with a reduction gear in every one I've ever seen.

It would be wonderful for all the owners of these newer F-150's if they could do it like you did! If they had the ability to dial it in on the fly like that, so to speak, for tire size changes, etc., that would sure make life a lot easier for everyone istalling the taller tires that are so prevelant.

Glad to see you were able to take care of yours so easily.
