I read in another thread that you should use a gasket on a 8.8" rear cover. Does that hold true for the front diff cover? Or is it needed on either end at all? I've just used blue or black RTV in the past and it's worked fine. I'm not up to speed on all the "particulars" on these Ford axles.

I changed front diff fluid last year and used just the RTV. Has worked fine and no leaks.
