4.88 or 4.56

Okay i currenty have a 2010 f150 fx4 with the 5.4L and 3.73 and 35s. Im happy with the trucks performance right now but im gona jump up to 37s in a few months, I know i need a gear change but how low exactly should i go. I have talked to people and some have said of course get 4.88 gears you need the power, others have said go with 4.56 because with 4.88s my RPMs are going to be very high cruising down the highway. So wondering if anyone has an opinions or input to help make a decision?

with 37s and 4.56 your highway rpms will be lower but youll get back more of the lost power with 4.88s and your rpms will be higher, BUT you may see an increase with both sets of gears depending on how you drive

with 37s id definitely get the 4.88s, youll love it with the 35s

I think your right, I live in texas north of san antonio so there are long highways and alot of roads with hills so i suppose lower gears would do me better?

for mileage purpose yeah, but if your going to 37s you might as well get the 4.88s and sacrifice mileage in the short run, or just save up and get 4.88s and 37s at the same time instead of doing it over again

mid range and up top, hell yeah, especially with the gryphon
truck sounds monstrous! and i wish i had the newer f150 with a 6speed it would be night and day difference especially with 4.88 gears
ill be getting 4.56s for my 35s when the funds are easily accessible

if you havent already, get a gryphon with custom tunes, even the canned tunes make the truck a dream to drive, my 4speed drives like a 5 speed
the 2-1 shift is f*cking fantastic and has so much pickup
my truck honestly drives better on the 87 than the 91 tune though
getting my electric fans, pulleys and custom tunes done by the end of the year
fans should be in this week followed by pulleys

but if you are going to do your exhaust, do it once over, some people go through 5 different setups, i went through 2 and wish i hadn't but glad i did because i found the long tubes the second time around

but if your contemplating long tubes, i say go for it!

Whats up with these gryphon programmers everyone keeps talking about how are they any different from edge or a SCT

save the money and do the gotts mod, theres another 300 or so bucks in your pocket!

the edge or sct are very generic tunes for the truck, the gryphon costs just as much but their canned tunes are better, shifts are firmer, torque convertor settings are better for in city cruising, more torque/power and they offer custom tunes along with having all the perks the edge has, and it is a rebadged edge

sct are great for custom tunes as well but if you like seeing the different parameters of your vehicle like instant, average mpg, revs, tranny, oil and cylinder head temps, etc; get the gryphon it is much better than the edge, ive owned both, truck is easier to drive, shifts better, more mileage and just go with the grypon! you wont regret it

Im just using a hypertech programmer right now just because i had it with my old f250 with a 5.4l an i was able to download new software on it for my current truck. It has noticeable power increases but the only thing i have to complian about is that when your slowing down to a stop from 3-2 and 2-1 the transmission jerks real hard, is this from the programmer or just the tranny? the truck has less than 5k on it.

probably a programmer issue

mine shifts smooth, you can even hear the down shifts with the headers and dual exhaust but doesn't jerk into gear, ever

It's the truck's transmission. It is a known issue and there is a TSB out for it. They will re-flash the ECM. I had it done, and it completely fixed the issue. Just make sure if you are using that Hypertech programmer, that you return the truck back to stock before you disconnect it and take it into the dealership.

4.88's all the way. I'm doing the same thing. I've got 35's right now and i got my 4.88's in yesterday. Love them! But after these 35's wear out a little bit, i'm jumping up to 37's. I notice a HUGE difference in drive ability. I can feel the tension release from the gears. Just need to get my speedo calibrated cause my bully dog doesn't compensate for them....only tires. :-(

As BLFX4K stated, just do the Gotts mod instead of buying a CAI. Saves you money for essentially the same performance.
