The owner's manual has a complete fuse chart. If you don't have it you can download it.

Normally with mine you har a clicking noise and then a second one. The first one is the electrical, and the second is the 4wd engaging. Pretty much just look it over on the manuel. Out of all the things on my truck thats the one thing i hate (i have a 97 also) is a **** for the 4x4. I wish it was one of those floor shifters cause they dont depend on electricity to use it.

Could be corrosion on the gem module connection. Could be a bad gem. I had the same thing on my 97. It turned out to be the gem.

Check for voltage at transfer case motor connector. If voltage detected, motor or tranfer problem. If no voltage gem or speed sensor problem. That is if you hear no clicking when flipping switch to 4hi or 4low.

Is anything else not working right. Interior lights working like they should, auto window down working. I know it sounds funny, but the gem module controls these things. Ford had a problem with the gem. I have a 97 also, replaced gem 6 months ago. I finally took it to the dealer and had them put on the computer. I had a short circut in the vss circut. New gem and it is working fine.

My shift fork in the front diff that engages the 4x4 broke on my truck. Dealer replaced it under warranty. Difference is that my light came on in my cluster. The truck still thought it was in 4x4 even when it wasn't. I would turn the **** and the light came on, but no clunk sound of the front diff engaging.
